Does room temperature describe my covered tray?

No. Measure near the medium at likely extremes. Covers and equipment can change warmth and drying. Use B1’s contextual warmth guidance, prevent overheating and introduce stronger light gradually after emergence.

Measure the growing environment, not just the room

A room thermometer describes its own location. Sun through a window, a closed cover and supplemental heat can produce different conditions around the seed. Tray edges can also differ from the center. Record where and when you measured rather than treating one reading as the whole day’s conditions.

PCG’s seed guide describes about 75-85 F (24-29 C) as a practical starting range, not a universal proven optimum. Use that context with actual medium conditions and the seedling’s response. Increasing heat is not a reliable way to rescue an unresolved seed or compensate for poor moisture and air.

Check light and warmth in a useful order

  1. Identify the stage. A seed before emergence and a seedling with opening leaves have related but different needs. Prepare bright, gentle light for emerging leaves.
  2. Map the exposure. Observe morning, midday and later conditions. Note direct sun, reflected heat, cover position and any heating or lighting equipment.
  3. Measure safely near the medium. Follow equipment instructions and avoid damaging seeds or roots when placing a sensor. Compare likely warmer and cooler positions without repeatedly disturbing the tray.
  4. Check moisture at the same time. Changes in heat, ventilation and light can change drying. A warm tray is not necessarily evenly moist, and condensation on a cover does not describe every seed-contact location.
  5. Adjust and recheck. Correct an observed overheating or drying risk, then confirm the result. Do not leave seedlings in harmful exposure to finish a planned observation period.

A worked example

In this illustrative case, a covered tray sits near a window. The room feels comfortable, but a midday measurement near the medium is noticeably warmer than the morning reading. The grower checks direct sun and supplemental heat, reduces the identified heat load and rechecks the seed zone. The room reading was not wrong; it described a different place.

Reassess after emergence

Open or remove a cover as emergence and local conditions require. Maintain gentle airflow without rapidly drying small seedlings, and introduce stronger light gradually. Green cotyledons can photosynthesize; a seedling does not have to wait for true leaves to benefit from suitable light. Avoid abrupt intense sun, and do not use fertilizer to correct heat or light stress.

Record the adjustment, the next warm and cool observations, moisture and any new injury. Progressive collapse, softness or worsening injury needs prompt assessment rather than more heat or a longer waiting interval. Stable observations support gradual changes; they do not establish one permanent setting for every season.
