Do not begin with the treatment
Begin with the plant, its history, and its growing conditions. A good diagnosis tells you what to do, the probable outcome, whether treatment is necessary, and what could make the situation worse.

1. Know the plant’s stage and recent introduction
Identify whether the plumeria is an established plant, mature cutting-grown plant, freshly rooted cutting, unrooted cutting, seedling, graft, recently transplanted plant, or a plant recently introduced to your growing environment.
A newly acquired plumeria may still be adjusting to changes in sunlight, temperature, humidity, watering, and location. It may also have been shipped, stored in reduced light, bare-rooted, defoliated, repotted, or moved from a very different climate. Each stage and situation responds differently to stress and treatment.
Record: plant stage, cultivar or tag, approximate age, rooted status, graft date when applicable, purchase or arrival date, previous growing location, and date introduced to the current environment.
2. Know the microclimate
Use the actual conditions around the plant, not only the country, state, city, or USDA Hardiness Zone. Two locations in the same yard can produce very different plumeria responses.
- Hours and timing of direct sunlight
- Day and night temperature
- Humidity and rainfall
- Wind exposure and airflow
- Reflected heat from walls, pavement, gravel, fencing, or windows
- Protection from buildings, trees, roof overhangs, screens, and other structures
- Whether the plant is in a container, raised bed, or the ground

3. Check root-zone moisture
Determine whether the root ball is dry, lightly moist, wet, or saturated. Do not diagnose a watering problem by looking only at the soil surface or the leaves. The surface can appear dry while the lower root zone remains wet.
A plumeria may wilt because it is dry, but it may also wilt because damaged, cold, or oxygen-starved roots cannot absorb water. Check more than one depth and compare the result with container size, root stage, weather, and the time since rain or irrigation.
4. Understand the drainage
Record the container size, number and condition of its drainage holes, potting mix, root occupancy, and how quickly the root zone dries. Also check:
- Whether the container sits directly on soil, mulch, pavement, a bench, or a plant caddy
- Whether drainage holes are obstructed
- Whether a saucer, decorative outer pot, or floor tray holds water
- Whether roots have grown through the drainage holes
- Whether water channels down the sides without wetting the center
- Whether the lower mix remains saturated after rain
- Whether the container is too large or too small for the functioning roots
Good drainage is not determined solely by the ingredients in the mix. Container design, root development, compaction, placement, irrigation method, and weather also control drainage and oxygen.
5. Review recent weather
Look at conditions during the days or weeks before the symptom appeared, not only today’s weather:
- Extreme or reflected heat
- Heavy or prolonged rain
- Sudden cold, frost, or freezing conditions
- Strong drying wind or storm exposure
- High humidity and slow drying
- Rapid day-to-night temperature changes
- Increased sunlight after moving or pruning
- Extended cloudy weather and reduced water use

6. Review the plant’s recent history
Write down dates whenever possible. Timing may provide the strongest clue.
- Shipping, transport, or a change of owner
- Repotting, transplanting, or bare-rooting
- Pruning, grafting, or taking cuttings
- Movement into stronger sun, shade, wind, heat, or indoor conditions
- Fertilizer, amendment, Epsom salt, compost, manure, or another nutrient addition
- Pesticide, fungicide, oil, soap, foliar fertilizer, or cleaning spray
- Prolonged rain, irrigation changes, or a missed watering period
- Being knocked over, tied, staked, rubbed, constricted, or otherwise damaged
Do not stack another treatment on top of an undocumented recent change. Record what was used, how much, where, and when.
7. Examine the entire plant
Do not focus only on one damaged leaf, flower, branch, or root. Inspect the complete pattern:

- The entire plant in its growing location
- The affected side and the unaffected side
- A close view of the symptom with a size reference
- Leaf undersides, petioles, or the opposite side of damaged tissue
- The stem base, soil surface, and complete container
- Drainage holes or visible roots when safe to inspect
8. Determine whether the problem is spreading
Mark or photograph affected areas and compare them over several days. Ask:
- Are existing spots or soft areas enlarging?
- Are new leaves, tips, or branches becoming affected?
- Is the damage limited to one side, height, age of leaf, or exposure?
- Did the visible damage appear at approximately the same time?
- Did it follow sun, wind, cold, spray, fertilizer, transport, or another event?
- Are nearby plumeria or unrelated plants showing a similar pattern?
A spreading pest, rot, or disease behaves differently from one-time sunburn, chemical injury, wind damage, cold injury, or physical damage. A stable scar does not need the same response as an expanding soft lesion.
9. Identify the probable cause, not just the symptom
“Brown spots,” “yellow leaves,” “wrinkled branches,” and “drooping leaves” are symptoms, not diagnoses. Compare the evidence before deciding whether the most probable cause is:
- Environmental stress or acclimation
- Improper watering or slow drainage
- Root damage, root loss, or root disease
- Insects, mites, snails, slugs, or another pest
- Fungal, bacterial, or viral disease
- Nutrient shortage, excess, imbalance, or unavailable nutrients
- Fertilizer salt or chemical injury
- Sunburn, heat, cold, wind, hail, or flooding
- Physical injury or constriction
- A normal seasonal, cultivar, or growth-stage response

10. Understand the treatment before applying it
Do not select a treatment until you have identified the most probable cause and considered whether treatment is necessary.
Before using any product

- Confirm that the product is appropriate for the probable problem.
- Confirm that the intended site, plant type, pest, or use is allowed by the label.
- Check temperature, sunlight, wind, and plant-stress restrictions.
- Follow the mixing rate, application method, interval, and maximum-use directions.
- Use required personal protective equipment and environmental precautions.
- Consider beneficial insects, pollinators, pets, children, water, and nearby plants.
- Test on a small representative area when the label and situation allow it.
- Record the product, active ingredient, rate, date, weather, and treated plants.
Do not spray a severely stressed plant
Avoid spraying a dehydrated, wilted, overheated, recently moved, or otherwise severely stressed plumeria unless the product label and the urgency of the diagnosed problem clearly support it. Oils, soaps, pesticides, fungicides, and foliar fertilizers can injure leaves when applied under unsuitable conditions.
