What changes when the shoot appears?
Record cotyledons and later true leaves separately. Reassess ventilation, light and moisture as leaves expand; do not assume extensive roots or automatic feeding readiness. Do not force an attached coat.
Understand what the first leaves tell you
Cotyledons are the seed leaves; true leaves develop later. Healthy green cotyledons exposed to light can photosynthesize while true leaves develop. A seedling does not need to wait for true leaves before its green seed leaves can contribute to growth. Its root system has also begun developing, but the visible shoot does not tell you how extensive or undamaged those roots are.
Keep this separate from advice about an unrooted cutting. A cutting can produce leaves from stored reserves without having established roots. A germinated seedling has a developing embryonic root system; the question is how to protect it, not whether to apply a cutting’s rooting schedule.
Check the emerging seedling in this order
- Record the stage. Note emergence, coat position, cotyledon opening and later true leaves. Keep the seedling label and date with the plant.
- Look at the stem near the medium. Record firmness and whether it stands normally. A pinched, translucent, darkening or collapsing area deserves prompt assessment rather than a feeding response.
- Reassess the cover and light. Open or remove a cover as emergence changes the needs of the tray. Provide bright, gentle light without abruptly exposing tender leaves to intense sun or letting a covered container overheat.
- Check moisture and airflow together. Keep the small occupied root zone moist but aerated. Avoid persistent saturation, prolonged complete drying and strong airflow that dries tiny seedlings rapidly.
- Protect attached tissue. Let the coat release naturally when possible. Do not pull a firmly attached coat or lift the seedling to inspect its roots.
If the seed coat remains attached
An attached coat is an observation, not an automatic instruction to remove it. Repeated handling can cause the injury you are trying to prevent.
A worked example
In this illustrative case, a seedling has two opening green cotyledons, no true leaves yet, a firm stem and suitably moist medium. The grower records the stage, adjusts cover ventilation and maintains gentle light. There is no reason to force true-leaf growth with fertilizer. If the stem later pinches or collapses, that new observation changes the decision: investigate promptly rather than continuing the same waiting plan.
