What should I check when only part of a tray emerges?
Compare sowing history, seed-zone moisture and actual tray temperatures, including edges. Correct an observed hazard. If conditions are suitable, monitor without repeated digging. A missing shoot alone does not identify failed seed.
Separate germination from visible emergence
The embryonic root can begin developing before a shoot appears above the medium. Count visible seedlings as emerged, and keep seeds with no visible shoot in an unresolved group. Do not turn that group into a failure count simply because neighboring seedlings appeared first. Seed-lot history and conditions within a tray can differ.
This does not mean waiting indefinitely through obvious deterioration. Soft, decomposing tissue or a collapsing seedling needs attention. Avoid repeatedly uncovering apparently sound seeds to prove that they are alive; handling can damage a developing root.
Work through the tray in a useful order
- Confirm the starting record. Check sowing dates, source lots, storage history if known, and the sowing method. Seeds planted on different days are not the same-age comparison.
- Map the pattern. Note whether unresolved positions cluster along one edge or occur throughout the tray. A pattern suggests where to investigate; it does not identify a cause by itself.
- Check the seed-contact zone. Look for moist, aerated medium rather than relying only on the surface appearance. Make checks beside the seed without probing through its body or likely root path. A wet lower layer does not prove good contact around the seed.
- Check actual warmth and exposure. Measure the medium when supplemental heat is used, and compare locations. Do not assume the room temperature or heat-mat setting equals the temperature experienced by every seed. A closed cover in strong sun can overheat.
- Correct the observed problem, then record it. Address confirmed drying, saturation or overheating without stacking unrelated treatments. Continue checking emerged seedlings as well as unresolved positions.
Turn observations into cautious decisions
Observation: Several edge positions have no visible shoots and their seed-contact medium is drier than the center. Possible meaning: Uneven drying may contribute. Next check: Review exposure and restore suitable moisture where needed without saturating the whole tray. Do not assume: Every unresolved seed is dead or needs fertilizer.
Observation: Medium remains wet and some tissue is soft or collapsing. Possible meaning: Deterioration is occurring, but the appearance alone does not identify a pathogen. Next check: Separate affected material where practical, review drainage and ventilation, and seek advice if losses continue. More waiting or more water is not automatically the answer.
A worked example
In this fictional example, twelve seeds from one labeled lot were sown together. Seven shoots are visible; five positions are unresolved. Three unresolved positions lie along a faster-drying edge. The grower records seven of twelve emerged, maps the positions, checks moisture and temperature, and corrects the observed uneven drying. The other two positions remain under observation. The record is a snapshot of emergence, not a final germination rate or proof that five seeds have failed.
Protect the seedlings that have already emerged
Provide suitable light and adjust cover ventilation as seedlings appear. Do not leave emerging seedlings in excessive heat or saturated medium while waiting for the last seed. Keep labels with the plants and avoid pulling attached seed coats or lifting seedlings to inspect roots. Feeding is a later decision based on roots, growth and the medium, not a treatment for an unresolved seed.
