Is my seed body touching damp medium?

For B1’s upright method, support the thicker body in evenly damp, aerated medium and leave the wing exposed. Confirm drainage and labeling. Do not measure depth from the wing tip or combine instructions for different methods.

Prepare the growing space before placing the seed

Choose the sowing method before filling the container. B1 describes an upright method: the thicker seed body contacts the moist medium while the papery wing remains exposed. Instructions for horizontal placement or another propagation method may describe depth differently. Combining those measurements can leave the seed body poorly seated or bury more of the seed than the chosen method intends.

Prepare a clean container with working drainage and an evenly moistened, porous seed-starting medium. Check that the container can drain in its actual position, including any tray or outer container. Moisture around the seed and moisture at the bottom are not necessarily the same. The goal is useful contact with damp, aerated medium, not a saturated container or a seed body suspended in a dry pocket.

Observe and check the setup

Identify the thicker body and papery wing before sowing. Look for physical damage without squeezing or opening the seed. A damaged wing is not the same as a crushed or decomposing body. Record the seed lot, sowing date, medium, container and planned location. Keep labels in place before the seeds become difficult to distinguish.

What it may mean

A visible wing helps you recognize the upright orientation, but it does not by itself establish good seed-body contact. Conversely, a wet tray does not prove that the seed-contact zone is evenly moist. Check the setup once carefully, then avoid repeatedly excavating a correctly placed seed to see whether it has started growing.

  1. Label the lot and select the upright method described in B1.
  2. Prepare the container and verify that its drainage is unobstructed.
  3. Moisten the medium evenly before positioning the seed.
  4. Seat the thicker body gently in the medium with the wing upward and exposed; do not measure depth from the wing tip.
  5. Record the starting position and check moisture and warmth at the seed zone during follow-up.

Do not assume

Soaking, when used, is preparation rather than a guarantee of viability. Do not discard seeds solely because they float or repeatedly dry and rehydrate a soaked lot. Keep seeds intended for storage separate from those being prepared for sowing. Neither fertilizer nor an extra watering substitutes for checking the actual seed-contact conditions.

Worked example of a placement check

Fictional example: A grower notices that a seed’s wing is visible but its thicker body is resting above the medium. Before leaving the newly sown tray, the grower gently seats the body in the damp mix, confirms drainage and photographs the labeled container. The grower does not bury the entire wing to reach a measurement taken from a different method. Later checks focus on moisture and visible development rather than digging the seed up each day.

In your record, describe which method you used and what you checked. Keep the observation separate from the outcome: correct preparation improves the setup but does not guarantee that every seed in the lot is viable.
