How microclimate changes this answer
Hot, windy container sites may dry much faster than the USDA Zone suggests. Humid, sheltered, cool, or rainy sites can remain wet much longer.

What does not change
- Plant stage and working roots come first.
- Surface dryness alone does not describe the lower root zone.
- Every water source must be counted, including rain and irrigation.
- Drainage and soil structure must allow air to return after watering.
- Symptoms such as yellowing, wilt, and leaf drop need more than one piece of evidence.
- A calendar can prompt a check, but it cannot authorize watering.
What can change with the season
- Root-zone and nighttime temperature
- Hours and intensity of light
- Leaf area, active growth, and flowering
- Humidity, wind, and evaporation
- Rain frequency, duration, and runoff
- Indoor or outdoor location
- Container heat and dry-down time
- Plant movement, repotting, or root work
Mode 1: waking and early active growth
Look for: sustained warmth, expanding leaves, active tips, warming roots, and a root zone that begins drying faster.
Action: inspect roots and drainage, then increase water gradually as use is confirmed. Do not move from dormancy to a full warm-season routine after one warm day or one small leaf.
Mode 2: established warm-season growth
Look for: a full canopy, active roots, rapid dry-down, sustained warmth, strong light, and possibly flowering.
Action: check more often, then water established plants slowly and evenly when root-depth evidence supports it. Heat and wind can increase demand; humidity, shade, oversized containers, or damaged roots can keep the root zone wet despite warm weather.
Mode 3: wet, humid, or storm pattern
Look for: repeated rain, cloud cover, high humidity, standing runoff, slower dry-down, and automatic irrigation that continues despite rainfall.
Action: pause unnecessary irrigation, empty trapped runoff, check lower moisture, and protect cuttings or root-reduced plants from repeated saturation. A hot day during a wet pattern does not prove the lower root zone is dry.
Mode 4: slowdown toward dormancy
Look for: cooler nights, shorter days, reduced growth, declining leaf area, and longer dry-down.
Action: reduce watering as use declines. Stop routine fertilizing about one month before expected dormancy. Continue counting rain and irrigation so the soil does not remain wet as the plant slows.
Mode 5: dormant, leafless, and cool
Look for: no active growth, little or no foliage, a cool root zone, and very slow water use.
Action: stop the active-season watering and fertilizer routine. Do not substitute a fixed “once every three or four weeks” schedule. Protect from freezing and unintended rain or irrigation, then use the detailed dormancy decision guide if conditions raise concern.
Special rule for propagation
- Unrooted or actively rooting cutting: water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Confirmed newly rooted cutting: water sparingly and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Seedling: use measured water and protect small active roots from saturation and prolonged complete dryness.
