How microclimate changes this answer

Six prevention steps
- Identify the stage. Rooting cuttings, newly rooted cuttings, seedlings, established plants, recently repotted plants, and dormant plants use water differently.
- Measure root-depth moisture. Do not rely only on the dry-looking surface.
- Confirm drainage. Keep holes open and empty standing runoff from saucers and decorative pots.
- Count every water source. Include rain, roof runoff, lawn irrigation, and hand watering.
- Adjust for the Growing Area. Heat, wind, humidity, shade, shelter, container material, and soil change dry-down.
- Record the cycle. Note when water was applied and how many days passed before the working root zone was ready again.
Critical cutting rules
- Rooting cutting: water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Newly rooted cutting: water sparingly and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Keep rooting cuttings and recently root-reduced plants out of automatic irrigation zones.
Before each watering, ask
- Is this plant actively growing, newly rooted, recently disturbed, or dormant?
- Is the active root zone actually ready?
- Did rain or another irrigation source add water?
- Are the drainage openings clear?
- Has temperature, light, humidity, wind, or leaf area changed?
- Did the previous watering dry evenly and predictably?
