How microclimate changes this answer
Hot, windy container sites may dry much faster than the USDA Zone suggests. Humid, sheltered, cool, or rainy sites can remain wet much longer.
The central problem is loss of air around the roots
A healthy container mix contains both moisture and air. When excess water fills the pore spaces for too long, oxygen movement into the root zone slows. Roots need oxygen for normal respiration and active function. As oxygen becomes limited, fine roots lose efficiency, water and nutrient uptake become impaired, and damaged tissue becomes more vulnerable to decay and root-rotting organisms.
This explains the confusing symptom of a plumeria wilting while its soil is still wet: damaged roots may be unable to supply the top of the plant even though water surrounds them.

Symptoms are evidence, not a diagnosis
Yellow leaves, wilting, leaf drop, weak growth, and reduced flowering can also result from underwatering, heat, cold, transplant stress, insects, disease, or nutrient problems. A reliable evaluation combines visible symptoms with root-depth moisture, drainage speed, recent rain or irrigation, plant stage, temperature, and stem firmness.

Plant stage changes the risk
- Rooting cutting: Water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is allowed if a firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Newly rooted cutting: Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Seedling: Its small root system needs careful moisture management; avoid both prolonged saturation and severe drying.
- Established active plant: Water use may be high, but the root zone must still drain and regain air.
- Dormant or leafless plant: Water use is low, so a formerly successful summer routine can become excessive.
Overwatering can also affect nutrition
Root injury can reduce nutrient uptake and create deficiency-like symptoms even when fertilizer is present. Repeated heavy leaching can also remove soluble nutrients, while poor drainage may allow salts to accumulate unevenly.
