How microclimate changes this answer
Hot, windy container sites may dry much faster than the USDA Zone suggests. Humid, sheltered, cool, or rainy sites can remain wet much longer.

First confirm dormancy rather than distress
- Likely seasonal slowdown: cooler nights, shorter days, gradually reduced growth, natural leaf yellowing or drop, firm stems, and no foul odor.
- Possible root or stem problem: soft or dark tissue, sour odor, poor anchoring, persistently wet soil, sudden collapse, or damage that does not match the seasonal pattern.
- Still active rather than dormant: warm roots, expanding leaves, new growth, and continued measurable dry-down.
Leaf loss alone does not prove healthy dormancy. If warning signs are present, use the Disease and Rot or Root and Soil Checker before deciding that the plant merely needs water.
Prepare before dormancy
- Stop routine fertilizing about one month before expected dormancy.
- Reduce water as growth, leaf area, temperature, and dry-down decline.
- Confirm that pots drain and are not sitting in saucers or watertight outer containers.
- Move container plants out of automatic irrigation, roof runoff, and repeated cold rain.
- Inspect for pests, stem injury, root problems, and trapped moisture before storage.
- Allow a suitable dry-down before severe cold; cold and wet roots are a dangerous combination.
Choose the correct dormancy setting
Potted, leafless, cool, and protected
Stop routine watering. Keep the container protected from freezing and unintended water. Check periodically for firmness, odor, pests, and moisture that remains trapped, but do not water just because a date has arrived.
In-ground in a warm or mild climate
The plant may be dormant, partly dormant, or still active. Count rain and irrigation, check the root zone, and observe leaf activity. Lawn irrigation and wet-season rain can provide more water than the plant can use even when no one waters the plumeria directly.
Indoors with leaves and active growth
This plant may not be truly dormant. Use a reduced-light active-plant assessment: check root-depth moisture, root-zone temperature, airflow, and drainage. Heating vents can dry foliage while the lower pot remains wet.
Bare-root or dry stored plant
Keep it dry, protected from freezing, and supported so stems and roots are not damaged. Do not periodically soak a bare-root dormant plant. Inspect for softness, shriveling beyond normal storage change, pests, and rot.
Before considering any dormancy water
- Confirm whether the plant is actually dormant, semi-active, or waking.
- Check root-zone temperature and moisture, not only the surface.
- Count recent rain, irrigation, leaks, and runoff.
- Assess stem firmness, root condition, anchoring, and odor.
- Confirm that water can drain and that cold conditions are not imminent.
- If the evidence is uncertain, wait and investigate rather than watering by calendar.
Do not add water when
- The root zone remains cool and moist.
- Freezing or near-freezing conditions are expected.
- The plant has soft, dark, or foul-smelling tissue that needs evaluation.
- The container has blocked drainage or standing runoff.
- The only reason is that three or four weeks have passed.
- The plant is an unrooted cutting being held through cool conditions.
Restarting after dormancy
- Wait for sustained warmth and clear active growth, not one warm afternoon.
- Inspect roots, soil condition, drainage, and winter damage.
- Increase water gradually as leaves expand and the root zone begins drying faster.
- Do not combine the first increased watering with a heavy fertilizer application.
