How microclimate changes this answer
Hot, windy container sites may dry much faster than the USDA Zone suggests. Humid, sheltered, cool, or rainy sites can remain wet much longer.

Before dormancy

- Move cold-sensitive containers to protection before damaging temperatures arrive.
Dormant storage
A leafless dormant plumeria uses very little water. In cool storage, wet mix may remain saturated long enough to damage roots and the lower stem. Keep the plant protected from freezing, roof leaks, and accidental irrigation. Periodically inspect stem firmness, container stability, pests, and the root zone rather than watering on a schedule.
If a stored plant becomes wrinkled, first check whether it remains firm and whether the root zone is dry or wet. Wrinkling with wet soil can indicate impaired roots and should not be treated by adding more water.
Partly active indoor plants
- Give the brightest appropriate light available and maintain airflow.
- Expect slower drying because indoor light and wind are usually lower.
- Check moisture below the surface and use pot weight before watering.
- Keep the pot away from standing water and cold floors or drafts.
- Inspect regularly for spider mites, scale, mealybugs, and other indoor pests.
Warm-climate winter growth
Some plumeria remain active in warm microclimates. If the plant has functional leaves, warm roots, and adequate light, it may still need irrigation. Continue checking root-depth moisture, but account for seasonal rain and shorter or cloudier days. Do not force dormancy by withholding necessary water from a genuinely active plant.
Rooting material needs separate handling
- Rooting cutting: Water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is allowed if a firm cutting looks dehydrated. Rooting is generally more reliable with sufficient warmth and light than in cold dormant storage.
- Newly rooted cutting: Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Seedling: Many seedlings may remain active indoors; manage their small root zones carefully and avoid cold saturation.
Restart watering safely
- Wait for stable warmth and clear signs of renewed growth.
- Inspect stems and roots for storage damage.
- Begin with moisture appropriate to the existing root mass.
- Increase water as leaves expand and the root zone dries faster.
- Acclimate stored plants gradually to stronger sun, wind, and outdoor temperature swings.
- Resume fertilizer after active growth and root function are established.
