How microclimate changes this answer
Hot, windy container sites may dry much faster than the USDA Zone suggests. Humid, sheltered, cool, or rainy sites can remain wet much longer.

Stage 1: seed before germination
- Use a clean, aerated germination medium that can hold light moisture without remaining saturated.
- Moisten evenly and gently so the seed is not displaced.
- Maintain suitable warmth and airflow.
- Do not leave the seed standing in water or repeatedly flood the container.
- Check the medium rather than watering automatically from the surface appearance.
Stage 2: emerged seedling
Cotyledons, or seed leaves, can perform photosynthesis while the first true leaves develop. The seedling has small active roots and limited reserves.
- Use measured water in an appropriately sized container.
- Keep the medium aerated; avoid constant saturation.
- Do not allow the entire small root zone to remain completely dry for a prolonged period.
- Increase light and exposure gradually so water demand does not change faster than the roots can respond.
- Do not pull off a seed coat that is still firmly attached; soften and assess it before intervening.
Stage 3: unrooted or actively rooting cutting
Rooting-cutting rule: water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Keep the cutting out of automatic irrigation and repeated rain.
- A swelling tip, inflorescence, or small leaf does not prove that functional roots are present.
- Do not keep the soil slightly moist or mist the soil on a schedule.
- Investigate softness, dark tissue, sour odor, or loss of stability before adding water.
Stage 4: confirmed newly rooted cutting
- Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Follow the small working root zone with pot weight and a root-depth check.
- Increase the amount gradually as roots expand and two or three full-sized leaves function normally.
- Do not move immediately to the mature-plant routine.
Stage 5: established vegetative plant
- Check root-depth moisture and drainage before watering.
- Apply water slowly and evenly through the working root area.
- Let the root zone dry and regain air before the next watering.
- Adjust checking frequency for leaf area, heat, wind, humidity, rain, container design, and the Growing Area microclimate.
Stage 6: flowering plant
Flowering may accompany strong active growth, but blooms are not automatic permission to keep soil continuously moist. Use the established-plant method and confirm the roots and drainage can support any increase in demand. Bud drop can have multiple causes, so do not diagnose it from water alone.
Stage 7: recently grafted plant
- Base watering on the rootstock’s existing roots, container, and root-zone moisture.
- Do not add water merely because the scion has wilted; graft stress and water demand are different questions.
- Protect the graft from movement, excessive heat, and abrupt exposure while the union develops.
- Do not push a fresh graft with extra water or fertilizer.
Stage 8: repotted, transplanted, bare-root, or root-reduced plant
- Assess how many functional roots remain and whether any tissue was cut or damaged.
- Reset the dry-down baseline for the new container, soil, and Growing Area.
- Do not assume that a large canopy means a recently reduced root system can use a large watering.
- Hold fertilizer until roots recover and normal water use returns.
Stage 9: slowdown and dormancy
- Reduce water as growth, leaf area, temperature, and dry-down decline.
- Stop routine fertilizing about one month before expected dormancy.
- Once dormant and leafless in cool conditions, stop the active-season watering schedule.
- Do not replace the old schedule with a fixed “every few weeks” rule.
- Use root-zone moisture, temperature, stem firmness, storage conditions, and signs of renewed growth before considering water.
