How microclimate changes this answer
Hot, windy container sites may dry much faster than the USDA Zone suggests. Humid, sheltered, cool, or rainy sites can remain wet much longer.

Step 1: verify dryness
- Check moisture at several depths and near the center of the root ball.
- Lift or weigh the container.
- Look for mix pulled away from the pot wall, rapid channeling, or a hard dry root ball.
- Inspect drainage and roots when safe and practical.
- Confirm the plant is actively growing and not dormant or unrooted.
Step 2: move out of extreme demand
- Provide bright filtered light while a severely stressed plant rehydrates.
- Reduce reflected heat and strong drying wind.
- Do not move a heat-stressed plant into deep dark shade for an extended period.
- Do not prune healthy leaves automatically; remaining leaves show recovery and support photosynthesis.
Step 3: rewet a container gradually and evenly
- Use suitable water and confirm open drainage holes.
- Apply a small amount slowly across the surface.
- Wait for the mix to absorb it rather than letting water race down the pot wall.
- Repeat measured passes until the root ball is evenly rewetted and excess begins to drain.
- Discard drainage from the saucer or outer pot.
- Record the total amount and container weight.
- Do not water again until root-depth moisture has declined appropriately.
If an established root ball has become strongly water-repellent, a brief controlled soak may help rewet it, but the container must drain completely afterward. Never use this approach for an unrooted cutting, a newly rooted cutting, a dormant plant, or a plant with suspected rot.
Step 4: rewet in-ground roots
- Check soil moisture within the actual root spread and depth.
- Apply water slowly enough to infiltrate instead of running away.
- Use multiple short passes when soil is crusted or very dry.
- Stop if water ponds, runs off, or the soil cannot accept it.
- Recheck moisture after infiltration before adding more.
- Keep mulch away from direct contact with the trunk.
Step 5: protect damaged roots
- Do not fertilize immediately; drought-damaged roots may be less able to manage salts.
- Do not repot during acute wilt unless a root-bound, hydrophobic, or failed mix prevents correction.
- Do not keep the mix continuously wet after the first rehydration.
- Watch for odor, soft roots, stem softening, or wilt that persists in wet mix.
- Judge progress from stem firmness, stable leaves, and healthy new growth.
Special plant-stage rules
- Unrooted or actively rooting cutting: do not soak the mix to treat wrinkling. Water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Confirmed newly rooted cutting: water sparingly and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Seedling: rewet the small root zone in measured amounts and avoid saturation.
- Established plant: rewet the full active root ball evenly when dryness is confirmed.
- Dormant plant: do not use active-growth rescue volumes without confirming warm conditions and actual root-zone need.
Next seven days
- Check root-depth moisture and container weight daily.
- Record whether leaves regain firmness overnight and remain stable.
- Protect from extreme afternoon stress while maintaining useful light.
- Do not add fertilizer, stimulants, or multiple treatments.
- Water again only after the stage-appropriate dry-down.
- Inspect roots if wilt continues while the mix remains wet.
