Signs recovery is more likely
- Trunk and branches remain firm rather than soft or hollow.
- Some roots are firm and light colored with healthy tips.
- The root ball accepts water and drains normally.
- Leaves regain some firmness after careful rehydration.
- Bud tips remain viable and new growth eventually resumes.
- No spreading rot, sour odor, or vascular discoloration is present.
Signs recovery is uncertain
- Most fine roots are dry, brittle, dark, or dead.
- Branch tips are dry far below the growing point.
- The trunk is deeply wrinkled and does not improve after the root zone is corrected.
- The plant remains wilted while the mix is wet.
- Stem tissue is soft, discolored, or foul smelling.
- The plant repeatedly loses new growth because roots cannot support it.
What recovery may look like
- Old scorched margins and dead spots remain visible.
- Some leaves, buds, or flowers may still drop.
- The plant may pause while it replaces fine roots.
- Water use may be lower than before the drought because root mass or canopy was lost.
- Healthy new leaves and firm new root tips are stronger evidence than rapid top growth.
- Severely stressed plants may need weeks or longer to show dependable progress.
Avoid the rebound-overwatering cycle
- Rewet a confirmed dry established root ball evenly.
- Let all excess drain.
- Record the container weight and moisture condition.
- Wait for root-depth moisture to decline before watering again.
- Use the smaller post-stress canopy and root system to recalibrate demand.
- Do not add fertilizer until stable recovery and healthy roots are evident.

Plant-stage cautions
