How microclimate changes this answer
Hot, windy container sites may dry much faster than the USDA Zone suggests. Humid, sheltered, cool, or rainy sites can remain wet much longer.

Stage gate
- Unrooted or actively rooting cutting: do not install an active reservoir or wick. Water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Confirmed newly rooted cutting: continue manual, sparse watering and allow the mix to dry before watering again.
- Seedling: use only a carefully measured trial with easy drainage and frequent inspection.
- Established active plant: proceed only when drainage and root health are confirmed.
- Dormant, leafless, or declining plant: do not use an active reservoir.

- Reservoir made from a suitable, clean material
- Overflow below the root-zone compartment and routed safely
- Manual drain that empties the reservoir completely
- Removable or adjustable wick or capillary column
- Reliable fill tube and visible level indicator

Step 1: test the container and mix
- Assemble the exact container, reservoir, overflow, wick, and structural mix without a plant.
- Wet the mix from above, let it drain, and check for perched or saturated zones.
- Add a measured reservoir volume and track moisture at upper, middle, and lower depths.
- Record how much water moves upward and how long the mix remains wet after the reservoir empties.
- Reduce wick capacity or change the mix if the lower zone does not regain air promptly.
- Confirm that the overflow and drain work under a full-flow test.
Step 2: install one established plant
- Select a healthy, actively growing plumeria with a confirmed root system.
- Position the plant at its previous soil line and avoid compacting the mix.
- Top-water once to settle the mix and let all excess drain.
- Leave the reservoir empty while recording the first normal dry-down.
- Inspect the lower root zone before activating the reservoir.
- Add a small measured amount and record the change in moisture and container weight.
Step 3: calibrate refilling
- Refill from root-zone evidence, not a calendar.
- Do not refill automatically the moment the gauge shows empty.
- Use an empty interval long enough for the lower root zone to regain air.
- Record refill volume, days to empty, days to safe dry-down, and weather.
- Recalibrate after heat waves, long rain, shade changes, pruning, repotting, moving, or leaf loss.
- If using fertilizer, monitor root-zone EC and periodically use an appropriate top-water and drainage procedure only for an established active plant with excellent drainage.
Step 4: maintain the system
- Inspect the reservoir, fill tube, indicator, drain, overflow, and wick regularly.
- Remove algae, sediment, insects, and roots entering the reservoir.
- Verify that the wick has not become clogged or more conductive as roots surround it.
- Test source water and root-zone pH and EC when salts or growth change.
- Drain and clean the system before storage or dormancy.
- Keep a manual-watering backup plan for equipment failure.
Stop the reservoir immediately when
- The lower mix remains wet after the reservoir is empty.
- Roots soften, darken, smell sour, or lose healthy tips.
- The plant loses leaves, enters dormancy, or moves into cooler conditions.
- Algae, mosquito access, sediment, or odor appears.
- The level drops unexpectedly fast, suggesting a leak or uncontrolled flow.
- Root-zone EC rises or fertilizer residue accumulates.
