How microclimate changes this answer
Hot, windy container sites may dry much faster than the USDA Zone suggests. Humid, sheltered, cool, or rainy sites can remain wet much longer.

Always keep the reservoir disabled for
- Unrooted or actively rooting cutting: water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Confirmed newly rooted cutting: water sparingly by hand and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Dormant or leafless plumeria: demand is too low for a standing reservoir.
- Root rot, poor drainage, or unexplained wet-soil wilt: inspect and correct the root zone first.
- Unknown or untested container: bench-test the mix, wick, drain, and overflow before use.
Drain and disable before
- Expected dormancy or major seasonal cooling
- Moving the plant to a cooler, shadier, less windy, or more humid location
- Repotting, root pruning, or correcting the soil mix
- Long rainy periods, tropical storms, hurricanes, or flooding risk
- Heavy pruning or canopy loss that sharply reduces water use
- Treating root disease, stem rot, or severe salt accumulation
- Leaving the system where no one can inspect it
- Freezing weather or winter storage
Dormancy shutdown
- Stop routine fertilizer about one month before expected dormancy.
- Stop refilling the reservoir as leaf activity and water use decline.
- Allow the reservoir to empty, then open the manual drain.
- Remove or disconnect the wick when the design permits.
- Inspect the lower mix and roots for prolonged wetness, odor, or decline.
- Clean the reservoir, indicator, fill tube, drain, overflow, and removable wick.
- Store the system empty and protect it from freezing, insects, and contamination.
- Manage the plant manually from root-zone evidence during dormancy.
Shutdown after moving or repotting
- Keep the reservoir empty while the plant establishes a new dry-down pattern.
- Top-water only as appropriate for the plant stage and let excess drain.
- Check several depths because old and new mix can hold water differently.
- Watch for transplant stress, root injury, compaction, and perched wet zones.
- Do not reactivate merely because the plant wilts after moving; first separate heat, sun, root damage, and wet-soil stress.
Restart checklist
- Wait for stable warm conditions and clear active growth.
- Confirm the plant is established, not merely producing a swelling tip.
- Inspect roots, drainage, mix structure, drain, overflow, wick, and reservoir.
- Top-water manually and record a normal dry-down without reservoir assistance.
- Confirm the lower root zone regains air in a reasonable period.
- Reconnect the smallest previously calibrated wick capacity.
- Add a partial measured reservoir fill.
- Monitor daily through the first cycle and require an empty-reservoir interval before refilling.
- Recalibrate for the current canopy, container, location, and weather.
Do not restart when
- Only one small leaf or an emerging tip is present without a confirmed established root system.
- Cool nights, prolonged rain, or high humidity are keeping the mix wet.
- The lower mix smells sour or remains saturated.
- The plant was recently repotted and the new moisture pattern is unknown.
- Roots, drain, overflow, or wick cannot be inspected.
- The plant is declining for an unresolved reason.
Emergency drain procedure
- Stop all automatic refill and disconnect the water supply.
- Open the reservoir drain and verify flow.
- Move the container out of continuing rain when practical.
- Check root-depth moisture, odor, drainage, and plant firmness.
