How microclimate changes this answer
Hot, windy container sites may dry much faster than the USDA Zone suggests. Humid, sheltered, cool, or rainy sites can remain wet much longer.

Confirm the plant is eligible
- Unrooted or actively rooting cutting: do not use an active reservoir. Water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Confirmed newly rooted cutting: use manual, sparse watering and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Seedling: manual measured watering is usually easier to evaluate; use a reservoir only in a carefully monitored trial.
- Established plant in active growth: may use a calibrated system when roots and drainage are healthy.
- Dormant, leafless, recently repotted, or declining plant: leave the reservoir empty and manage manually.
Before every refill
- Confirm active leaves and growth.
- Check recent heat, wind, humidity, rain, shade, and forecast.
- Check moisture in the upper, middle, and lower root zone.
- Confirm the previous reservoir water is gone and note how long it lasted.
- Check that the lower mix is no longer saturated.
- Inspect the overflow, drain, level indicator, fill tube, and reservoir for blockage, odor, algae, insects, or roots.
- Add only the calibrated amount needed for the present demand.
- Record the refill date and volume.
Do not refill merely because
- The gauge reads empty.
- The surface looks dry while the lower mix remains wet.
- A timer or calendar says it is watering day.
- The reservoir held more water during a previous heat wave.
- The plant is wilting without first checking wet roots, rot, heat, or vascular damage.
- You mixed fertilizer and do not want to waste it.
First month operating schedule
- Daily at first: note reservoir level, weather, leaf condition, and lower root-zone moisture.
- At every empty reading: wait, recheck the lower mix, and document the empty-reservoir interval before refilling.
- Weekly: inspect the drain, overflow, wick, fill tube, algae, insects, odor, and roots near the reservoir.
- After two to four weeks: compare with a similar manually watered plant and review growth, water use, root-zone pH, and EC.
- After any major weather or location change: recalibrate rather than continuing the previous refill pattern.
Fertilizer and salt management
- Do not place unmeasured fertilizer in the reservoir.
- Calculate concentration using the actual source water and final solution volume.
- Monitor root-zone EC because upward water movement can leave salts behind.
- For an established active plant with excellent drainage, use an appropriate top-water and drainage procedure when measurements show accumulation; do not flush blindly.
- Do not let drained fertilizer solution remain in a saucer or closed outer container.
- Stop routine fertilizer about one month before expected dormancy.
Weather adjustments
- Heat and wind: check more often, but increase refill only when the root zone and plant confirm higher use.
- Rain: prevent rain from filling the root zone and reservoir beyond the calibrated amount; drain excess promptly.
- High humidity or shade: extend the empty interval because dry-down may slow.
- Cool nights: reduce or suspend reservoir use.
- Storm or power interruption: verify pumps, floats, drains, and overflow before resuming.
Drain and stop immediately when
- The lower mix remains saturated after the reservoir is empty.
- Leaves yellow or wilt while the root zone is wet.
- Roots darken, soften, smell sour, or lose healthy tips.
- The plant loses leaves or begins dormancy.
- Algae, insects, slime, sediment, or odor develops.
- Reservoir loss is unexpectedly fast or the overflow does not work.
- The plant is moved, repotted, pruned heavily, or treated for a root problem.
