How to Evaluate a Wicking System for Plumeria

A wick moves water from a reservoir into potting mix by capillary action. Whether that helps or creates a continuously wet lower root zone depends on the wick, mix, container height, root mass, reservoir level, temperature, humidity, wind, and plant stage.

Reviewed August 1, 2026. Do not use an active wick for an unrooted cutting, and do not treat a wick as a substitute for checking the root zone.

Do not use a wick for these plants

  • Unrooted or actively rooting cutting: water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
  • Confirmed newly rooted cutting: water sparingly by hand and allow the mix to dry before watering again.
  • Dormant or leafless plumeria: disconnect the wick and empty the reservoir.
  • Plant with suspected rot or poor drainage: correct the root problem first.
  • Recently moved or repotted plant: establish its new dry-down pattern before adding a constant water pathway.

What controls the wick rate

  • Wick material, diameter, length, number, cleanliness, and contact with the mix
  • Height difference between reservoir water and root zone
  • Peat, coir, bark, perlite, pumice, and other mix proportions
  • Container height, width, color, material, and sun exposure
  • Root mass and active leaf area
  • Heat, wind, humidity, shade, rain, and seasonal growth
  • Salt accumulation or biological growth in the wick and reservoir

Bench-test before planting

  1. Assemble the exact container, mix, wick, and reservoir intended for use.
  2. Measure the dry weight of the filled container.
  3. Top-water the mix evenly, let it drain fully, and record the wet weight.
  4. Fill the reservoir with a measured amount and record the starting level.
  5. Measure moisture or weight at regular intervals in the upper, middle, and lower mix.
  6. Observe how high and how quickly the wetting front travels.
  7. Let the reservoir empty and record how long each layer takes to decline.
  8. Change only one variable, such as wick size or number, then repeat.

Set up a cautious plant trial

  1. Select a healthy established plumeria in active growth.
  2. Provide a manual drain and overflow and make the wick removable.
  3. Keep roots from growing directly into open reservoir water when practical.
  4. Begin with the smallest wick capacity that produced useful movement in the bench test.
  5. Use a measured reservoir fill rather than continuous automatic refill.
  6. Allow an empty-reservoir interval and check root-depth moisture before adding water.
  7. Compare with a similar manually watered plant.
  8. Record weather, water use, root-zone moisture, pH, EC, growth, and odor.

Warning signs

  • Lower mix remains saturated after the reservoir empties.
  • The pot becomes heavier over time at the same refill schedule.
  • Roots darken, soften, smell sour, or stop producing healthy tips.
  • Leaves yellow or wilt while the lower root zone is wet.
  • Algae, insects, slime, or odor develops in the reservoir.
  • Root-zone EC rises as fertilizer solution repeatedly wicks upward.
  • The plant enters dormancy but the wick continues supplying water.

Seasonal operation

  • Hot active growth: monitor frequently because demand and reservoir temperature can change quickly.
  • Rainy or humid periods: leave the reservoir empty when demand falls.
  • After moving or repotting: disconnect the wick while the new root-zone behavior is established.
  • Before dormancy: stop routine fertilizer about one month before expected dormancy, disconnect the wick, drain the reservoir, and shift to manual observation.
  • Cold conditions: do not allow a reservoir to maintain a cold wet root zone.
