- Unrooted or actively rooting cutting: no reservoir or active wick. Water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Confirmed newly rooted cutting: use manual, sparse watering and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Seedling: a carefully designed system may be tested only if moisture can be measured and the small root zone remains aerated; manual control is easier to evaluate.

- Dormant or leafless plant: empty or disable the reservoir and manage manually for very low demand.

- Owner willing to measure moisture at several depths and inspect roots
- Small pilot group rather than the entire collection
How to trial it
- Choose one healthy established plant and a comparable manual-watered plant.
- Confirm drainage and measure the reservoir capacity and wick rate.
- Top-water once to settle and evenly moisten the mix, then let excess drain.
- Allow the reservoir to remain empty while observing how the upper, middle, and lower root zone dry.
- Add only a measured amount to the reservoir during active demand.
- Do not automatically refill as soon as the gauge reaches empty; check the root zone first.
- Track refill amount, weather, growth, root-zone moisture, pH, EC, odor, and root condition.
- Stop the trial if the lower root zone stays saturated, roots soften, odor develops, or growth declines.
