How microclimate changes this answer

Start with the plant stage
- Unrooted or actively rooting cutting: water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Confirmed newly rooted cutting: water sparingly and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Seedling: use measured water and monitor the small active root zone.
- Established active plant: calibrate using the full root ball and canopy demand.
- Dormant or leafless plant: keep demand very low and avoid a cold wet root zone.
Create a baseline
- Confirm open drainage holes and an airy structural mix.
- Measure or note the dry container weight before watering when practical.
- For an eligible established plant, water evenly until the root ball is wetted and excess drains.
- Discard drainage from saucers or outer containers.
- Record the wet weight, water volume, room temperature, light, humidity, and canopy stage.
- Check upper, middle, and lower moisture daily at first.
- Record the weight and moisture condition when the established plant is ready for water again.
- Use that range as a reference, not an automatic calendar.
Indoor factors that slow dry-down
- Lower light or shorter winter days
- Cool rooms and cool container surfaces
- Reduced air movement
- Higher humidity
- Leaf loss, pruning, dormancy, or weak growth
- Large containers with small root systems
- Decorative cachepots or saucers holding drainage water
- Dense, decomposed, or compacted mix
Indoor factors that increase demand
- Strong grow lights or sunny windows
- Warm rooms and active leaves
- Forced-air heating or fans
- Small containers with large established root systems
- Low indoor humidity
- A plant moved outdoors or into substantially brighter light
Before each watering
- Check root-depth moisture, not only the surface.
- Lift or weigh the container and compare with the baseline.
- Confirm that the previous water left the pot and saucer.
- Check leaves, stem firmness, roots when accessible, and any odor.
- Review the past several days of light, temperature, and humidity.
