Morning heat check

How to water an established active plant
- Apply water slowly and evenly across the active root zone.
- Use multiple short passes if very dry mix repels water or soil runs off.
- For containers, continue only until the root ball is evenly wetted and excess drains.
- For in-ground plants, wet the actual root spread instead of only the trunk area.
- Record volume and how long the next dry-down takes.
- Do not leave containers standing in drainage water.
Reduce heat load before adding more water
- Shade the container or place it inside a larger ventilated outer pot without trapping water.
- Move plants away from reflective walls and hot pavement when practical.
- Provide wind protection without eliminating airflow.
- Use light-colored container surfaces or shields.
- Apply an appropriate mulch over in-ground roots while keeping it away from the trunk.
- Acclimate plants gradually after moving into stronger sun.
Plant-stage rules
- Unrooted or actively rooting cutting: heat does not justify repeated watering. Water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Confirmed newly rooted cutting: water sparingly and allow the soil to dry before watering again; protect the small root system from extreme container heat.
- Seedling: check frequently and use measured amounts because the small root zone can dry quickly.
- Established active plant: use root-depth moisture and actual dry-down.
- Dormant or leafless plant: hot air alone does not create active-growth demand.
During a heat wave
- Check vulnerable containers early each day.
- Separate temporary midday wilt from persistent morning wilt.
- Pause nonessential fertilizer, repotting, and heavy pruning.
- Inspect irrigation flow because emitters and hoses can change under heat.
- Do not apply sun-heated hose water to roots; flush the hose safely first.
- Recalibrate again when the heat wave ends.
