How microclimate changes this answer
Hot, windy container sites may dry much faster than the USDA Zone suggests. Humid, sheltered, cool, or rainy sites can remain wet much longer.
Start with what the root zone actually received
- Use a simple rain gauge in the same growing area when possible.
- Remember that roof overhangs, walls, tree canopies, shade cloth, and greenhouse covers can keep a pot partly or completely dry.
- Dense foliage may shed water beyond a small container.
- Wind-driven rain may soak one side of a collection while leaving another relatively dry.
- Check moisture below the surface after the rain rather than assuming every plant received the same amount.
Rainy-weather decision steps
- Pause timers and routine irrigation. Prevent the irrigation system from adding its normal amount automatically.
- Measure or estimate rainfall at the plants. Do not rely only on a regional weather report.
- Check root-depth moisture. Inspect representative containers and each distinct microclimate area.
- Confirm drainage. Empty saucers, clear blocked holes, and move vulnerable containers out of standing water.

Container and in-ground risks differ
Potted plumeria
- Keep drain holes open and above pooled water.
- Remove water from saucers and decorative outer pots.

- Do not wrap or seal the pot in a way that traps moisture and reduces airflow.
In-ground plumeria

- Established active plant: Rain can replace irrigation when it adequately wets the root zone.
- Dormant or leafless plant: Protect it from prolonged cool, wet soil because water use is very low.
After several wet days
- Inspect lower stems and root crowns for softening or discoloration.
- Look for sour odor, loose anchoring, or roots deteriorating at drainage holes.
- Increase spacing and airflow where practical.
- Do not add fertilizer to a saturated or visibly stressed root zone.
- Resume irrigation only after moisture evidence shows that the plant needs it.
