Check moisture at root depth instead of judging only by the surface.

How microclimate changes this answer
Hot, windy container sites may dry much faster than the USDA Zone suggests. Humid, sheltered, cool, or rainy sites can remain wet much longer.

When rainwater may help
- The current source has high alkalinity that gradually raises root-zone pH.
- The current source has elevated EC, sodium, or chloride.
- Hardness is causing scale and emitter problems.
- A tested rainwater blend provides more useful final chemistry than either source alone.
- The system provides a reliable supplemental supply without unsafe storage or cross-connections.
When it may not be better
- The roof, gutters, flashing, tank, animals, or nearby activity introduce contaminants.
- Refineries, industrial emissions, heavy traffic, wildfire smoke, coastal salt, or other local deposition affects the rain or material washed from the roof.
- Screens, first flush, mosquito protection, overflow, or tank maintenance are inadequate.
- Low alkalinity makes pH change rapidly after fertilizer is added.
- The fertilizer program assumes calcium and magnesium supplied by the previous water.
- Stored water develops sediment, algae, odor, insects, or biological contamination.
- The municipal or well source already tests well and supports stable root-zone conditions.
- Collection is too small or seasonal to supply a consistent routine.
Do not use these claims as proof
- “Natural” does not mean sterile or contaminant-free.
- Rainwater does not always have a neutral pH.
- Low EC does not mean the water supplies complete nutrition.
- One plant looking better after rain does not isolate water chemistry from temperature, humidity, leaf washing, cloud cover, or irrigation volume.
- A visible disinfectant smell does not prove municipal water is harming plumeria.
A useful test
- Test the current source and collected rainwater.
- Compare pH, alkalinity, EC, hardness, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and chloride.
- Add catchment-specific metals or biological tests when warranted.
- If blending, test the final blend rather than predicting it from labels.
- Adjust fertilizer for the final chemistry.
- Compare small groups of established plants while keeping other care consistent.
- Track new growth, root-zone pH and EC, deposits, drainage, and equipment performance.
Keep the watering rule separate
- Unrooted or actively rooting cutting: rainwater does not permit repeated watering. Water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Confirmed newly rooted cutting: water sparingly and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Seedling: use measured water and avoid prolonged saturation or complete dryness.
- Established plant: check root-depth moisture before watering.
- Dormant or leafless plant: stored rainwater availability is not a reason to water.
