- Use a sound container that never held pesticides, fuel, solvents, or other hazardous chemicals.
- Cover the tank and screen every opening against mosquitoes and debris.
- Direct overflow away from foundations, trunks, and saturated root zones.
- Label nonpotable water and prevent cross-connections with drinking-water plumbing.
Maintain safe storage

Introduce rainwater gradually

- Review fertilizer because low-mineral, low-alkalinity water can change the nutrient and pH response.
- Test the final blend if rainwater is mixed with another source.
- Begin with a small group of established plants.
- Monitor root-zone pH, EC, drainage, growth, and irrigation equipment.
- Retest after roof work, tank cleaning, wildfire smoke, contamination, or a long storage period.
Use the same stage-based watering rules
- Unrooted or actively rooting cutting: rainwater does not permit repeated watering. Water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
