Start with plant stage
- Unrooted or actively rooting cutting: water once at the beginning of the rooting process, then do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown. Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Confirmed newly rooted cutting: water sparingly and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Seedling: measure gently in the small active root zone without damaging tender roots.
- Established plant: compare several root-depth measurements with drainage, weather, and plant demand.
- Dormant or root-reduced plant: treat a dry reading cautiously; low demand may still make routine watering unsafe.

Pot weight
Learn how the container feels after a known thorough watering and after a safe dry-down. Pot weight integrates moisture across more of the root zone than a surface touch, though large or fixed containers may be impractical to lift.
Wooden skewer or unfinished chopstick
Insert gently to a representative root depth away from the trunk, leave briefly, then examine for coolness, damp particles, and a wet mark. Use more than one location in a large pot. Do not force the skewer through dense roots.
Drainage-opening check
Where access is safe, inspect the lower mix through a drainage opening. A dry surface with damp lower soil is a reason to wait. Also confirm that the opening is not blocked and the pot is not holding runoff.
Careful sample
From an open area away from the trunk, examine a small sample at root depth for moisture, compaction, odor, and structure. Use this selectively to avoid disturbing roots.
Best methods for in-ground plumeria
- Check within representative parts of the active root area, not only against the trunk.
- Compare more than one depth and location when soil, slope, shade, or irrigation varies.
- Use a narrow soil probe, auger sample, or careful trowel opening without cutting major roots.
