Inspect below the surface
Check moisture at root depth instead of judging only by the surface.

How microclimate changes this answer
Hot, windy container sites may dry much faster than the USDA Zone suggests. Humid, sheltered, cool, or rainy sites can remain wet much longer.
Do not automatically water every two or three days. Determine the roots present, any cut or damaged tissue, soil moisture, drainage, and the new Growing Area before applying water.

Path 1: unrooted or actively rooting cutting
- Water once at the beginning of the rooting process.
- Do not water the mix again until two or three full-sized leaves have grown.
- Light misting is acceptable if the firm cutting looks dehydrated.
- Keep the cutting out of automatic irrigation and repeated rain.
- Do not mistake a swelling tip or small leaf for confirmation of a working root system.
Path 2: confirmed newly rooted cutting
- Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Use a small root-depth check and container weight to follow the limited root zone.
- Increase water gradually as roots expand and two or three full-sized leaves function normally.
- Do not move immediately to the mature-plant watering routine.
Path 3: seedling with active roots
- Use measured water in an aerated, appropriately sized root zone.
- Keep the medium from remaining saturated.
- Do not allow the small active roots to remain completely dry for a prolonged period.
- Account for the seedling’s smaller container, tender tissue, heat, airflow, and light.
Path 4: intact rooted transplant
This includes a healthy rooted plant moved from one container to another or from a pot into suitable in-ground soil with most of the root ball intact.
- Confirm that the new container or planting area drains correctly before planting.
- Set the plant at the correct depth and support it so roots are not repeatedly moved.
- Water to settle the root ball and surrounding soil only when drainage is suitable and the roots were not treated as fresh cut tissue.
- Make sure the original root ball is actually moistened; water can bypass it into new surrounding soil.
- After the initial application, recheck root-depth moisture before every additional watering.
- Expect water use to change after relocation, shade change, or root disturbance.
Path 5: bare-root, root-pruned, or damaged-root plant
- Photograph and assess the healthy roots that remain.
- Allow clean cut surfaces to dry appropriately for their size and local conditions before placing them into wet soil.
- Use a clean, correctly sized container or suitable planting area matched to the reduced root system.
- Do not automatically soak the entire new soil volume.
- Follow the aftercare plan for the actual remaining roots; a plant with almost no viable roots may need to be managed as a cutting.
- Hold fertilizer until firmness, predictable dry-down, and healthy active growth return.
The first 14 days: observe, do not follow a calendar
- Day 0: record plant stage, roots present, soil, drainage, root-depth moisture, Growing Area, and initial water.
- Days 1-3: check firmness, stability, odor, standing water, and drainage. Do not add water without a root-depth reason.
- Days 4-7: compare dry-down, leaf response, tip activity, and anchoring.
- Days 8-14: establish the new setting’s moisture pattern and adjust only one major variable at a time.
Weather and acclimation
- Protect a newly moved plant from abrupt intense sun, severe wind, flooding rain, and cold.
- Increase sun exposure gradually when the previous growing conditions were different.
- Remember that shade and shelter usually slow dry-down.
- Count rainfall and irrigation overlap as part of the watering record.
- Do not use extra water to compensate for sunburn, heat injury, transplant shock, or leaf loss without checking the root zone.
Warning signs
- Stem base becomes soft, dark, cool, or collapses
- Sour or decaying odor develops
- Plant becomes unexpectedly loose
- Wilt continues while the root zone remains wet
- Discoloration spreads from damaged roots into the trunk
