For routine work, choose a period when the plumeria has dependable warmth and enough active season remaining to rebuild roots. Avoid major elective root reduction during cold dormancy, immediately before expected cold or prolonged rain, or while the plant is dehydrated, heat-stressed, flowering under severe stress, or recovering from another major change. Urgent rot, a broken container, or a dangerous unstable plant may require immediate action.

Step 3: Prepare the plant, workspace, and record

  6. Keep clean tools separate from tools used on soft, foul, or suspicious tissue. Reclean and sanitize between plants and when moving from diseased to sound tissue.

Do not fertilize, drench with supplements, or saturate the pot merely because repotting is scheduled. The ideal pre-work moisture depends on the medium, root ball, container, and reason for repotting: it should be manageable and cohesive without being waterlogged or dangerously heavy.

Step 4: Remove and examine the root ball safely

  1. Secure long branches so they cannot whip, split, or act as levers against the trunk.

Step 5: Choose the least disruptive root correction

Option A: Up-pot with limited corrective pruning

Use when the plant is healthy, larger growth is acceptable, and the next container will not create an excessive unused wet volume. Do not bare-root a mature plumeria automatically; complete washing is a diagnostic or disease-management decision, not routine housekeeping.

Option C: Maintenance root reduction to retain container size

Use only for a vigorous mature plant when size control is the defined goal and the grower can provide suitable recovery conditions. Remove the outer and lower portion in measured, even sections, preserving the root flare and major structural roots. The safe amount depends on plant vigor, root architecture, canopy, season, temperature, humidity, and aftercare; do not apply one percentage to every plant.

Option D: Targeted removal of decay or girdling roots

Trace the root to understand what it supports before cutting. Remove dead, broken, or decayed tissue back to sound tissue with clean tools.
