What the classification uses
The tool combines a regional winter baseline with the plant’s actual growing environment. The code is intentionally based on a small set of high-impact conditions; additional answers personalize care without changing the MC label.
The 2023 USDA Zone represents the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature for 1991-2020. Each a/b half-zone spans 5 degrees F.
The grower may mark the plant’s spot one half-zone warmer, unchanged, one half-zone colder, or unsure. The official USDA Zone itself is never changed.
Moisture pattern, summer heat and light, and useful outdoor season separate wet, seasonal, dry, arid, long-season, and short-season care.
Indoor or greenhouse active growth takes priority because protected conditions can differ substantially from the outdoor location.

Definitions, evidence, and care implications
Tropical Wet
Frost-free outdoor growth with frequent active-season rain and humidity.
Assigned when
The derived winter class is frost-free, the plant grows primarily outdoors or in-ground, and active-season moisture is frequently rainy and humid.
Why it is separate
After protected growing, regular freezes, dry climates, occasional cold, and a distinct wet/dry pattern are ruled out, persistent warm-season moisture becomes the dominant care pressure.

Tropical Seasonal Wet/Dry

The timing of rainfall changes watering, feeding, drainage pressure, and disease risk enough that one year-round routine would be misleading.

- Containers or soil behave very differently between the wet and dry portions of the year.

The plant is not primarily indoor or greenhouse grown and the derived winter class is regular freeze with a long outdoor season. A grower can select six months or more, or the automatic estimate can select long when the adjusted score is at least 7.5 and summer heat is not mild.

A protected structure can create light, airflow, humidity, pest, root-temperature, and dry-down conditions that differ sharply from the outdoor USDA Zone.

- Usable light depends on glazing, windows, or grow lights.
- Airflow, overnight condensation, and root temperature are managed directly.
- Pests can build without outdoor weather or natural predators interrupting them.

Common questions about the standard
Does my ZIP code determine my MC profile?
No. A U.S. ZIP can locate the 2023 USDA winter baseline. Moisture, heat, season length, protection, growing method, and the plant’s exact location complete the classification.
Can one grower have more than one MC profile?
Yes. A rain-exposed area, a sheltered courtyard, a greenhouse, and an indoor growing space may behave differently. Create a separate Growing Area for each place that needs meaningfully different care.
Can the MC code change?
Yes. Change it when the primary growing environment or measured conditions change enough to cross a decision branch. Seasonal care can also change without changing the main code.
Why is plant age not used to choose the MC code?
The code describes the growing environment. Plant stage, cultivar, root development, pot size, and health refine the care plan applied within that environment.
Is the result a diagnosis or a weather forecast?
No. It organizes plumeria care context. Condition checkers, inspection, recent weather, soil or tissue tests, and professional evaluation may still be needed.
